As you prepare to marry the love of your life, it’s natural to have concerns about the future. You hope that your marriage remains strong forever, but there’s always a chance you could find yourself pondering divorce down the road.

Since it’s best to protect yourself through all available means, you should consider creating a prenuptial agreement before you tie the knot. But while it may sound like a good idea to you, it doesn’t necessarily mean your imminent spouse feels the same way.

You must take great caution when asking your partner for a prenuptial agreement, as you don’t want to cause a serious argument before your wedding day. Here are some tips for asking for a prenuptial agreement:

  • Explain the benefits: Start off by explaining the benefits of a prenuptial agreement. As you do so, make it clear that you aren’t preparing for a future divorce but instead doing your part in ensuring that the both of you are protected should it happen.
  • Share your feelings: If you have a specific reason for wanting to create a prenuptial agreement, don’t hesitate to share that with your partner. For example, maybe you watched your parents go through a bad divorce while you were young. This made you realize how important it is to have a prenuptial agreement in place.
  • Hear them out: Just because you’re in favor of a prenuptial agreement and understand what it can do doesn’t mean your partner is in the same position. They may not know the first thing about creating a prenuptial agreement. They may also have some concerns about how it works. Let them talk, answer questions to the best of your ability and learn more together.

There is no right or wrong way to ask your partner for a prenuptial agreement. The best thing you can do is share your feelings, keep an open mind and work with them to settle on an agreement that suits the two of you.

Once you create a prenuptial agreement, you’ll feel better about your marriage and what would come should you ever decide to divorce.
